How do you accept credit cards on your website?

We've researched the options and come up with two we feel comfortable recommending. The choice you make will depend on your specific needs.

Use  PayPal  if you:

Will be processing transactions online in amounts less than $100
Do not need funds deposited to your account in a specified time window
Can accept limited credit Authorization. (Authorization is given by matching a customer's credit card with address information they provide. This is not a guarantee that funds are actually available in the customer's account.)
Accept the fact that PayPal is not a bank, and funds are not federally insured.

Examples of possible uses for this service would be organizations selling memberships or subscriptions. There is a per-transaction fee plus a percentage of the amount charged, but no set-up fee.

Accounts we maintain who are currently using Pay Pal are:
www.fengshuiguild.com accepts payments for membership applications and renewals, other member services
www.harmoniyum.com accepts client payments online for services and products
www.lorriekazan.com accepts payment online for psychic readings and newsletter subscriptions, limited products
www.icaruspuppet.org accepts performance reservations and ticket payments through their web site

A Merchant Account is more suitable if:

Your average transaction amount exceeds $100
You feel more comfortable doing business with a federally insured banking institution
You plan to interface to an online shopping cart store to offer products
You plan to process a high dollar volume each month
You want assurance that funds will be deposited to  your account in a timely manner (usually within 24 hours, but no later than 72 hours after processing)

A Merchant Account offers a full range of services including:

Detailed transaction reports
A higher level of validation on a customer's credit card (checks to see if funds are available in addition to matching address information to the credit card used)
24-hour live customer service
Greater flexibility, including the ability to accept electronic checks from your customers

The Merchant Account we recommend is the one we use on this web site to accept credit card payments. They have been in business for 13 years, and understand the unique needs of processing transactions in an Internet Environment. We were up and running within 7 days.
